The X-Men are a group of mutants form by Professor Charles Xavier in order to respond to the natural emergence of mutants in human society. Mutants (homo superior) are the next stage in human evolution in Marvel Comics. Every mutant is born with a mutation known as the X-Gene which can change their biology, physiology, and genetics usually resulting in some form of superpower. These mutations usually occur during puberty, but can occur during other times in someone's lifespan, and are often in response to a traumatic event.

As more mutants emerged in human society, many humans would see them as outcasts and freaks that would either need to be cured of their mutations or eradicated from existance. Because of this fear in humans, the X-Men would work hard to promote peace between humans and mutants so that they could live in a peaceful society. But not all mutants and humans would agree with these ideals and groups such as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, who believe in mutant supremacy, and the Friends of Humanity, who believe in human supremacy, would fight against the X-Men in order to reach their goal of their prefered supremacy. So, in order to protect both human and mutantkind from these groups of people, Charles Xavier tought the X-Men to use their powers to proctect both humans and mutants from the reactionary humans and fanatic mutants at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, a place where young mutants can live in peace and learn to control their powers.

While the X-Men lineup can consist of any mutant in Marvel Comics, the current lineup consists of 15 mutants across two teams. Originally the X-Men were only one team lead by Professor Charles Xavier but since his passing the team has since split into two differnt teams with two differnt leaders. The first team, the Alaska Team, consists of the mutants Beast, Glob, Juggernaut, Kid Omega, Magik, Magneto, Psylocke, Temper, and Xorn, and is being lead by Cyclops. The second team, the Louisiana Team, consists of the mutants Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine, and is being lead by Rogue.
