History of Magic
Magic is something that has been practice in just about every culture and civilization throughout history. In ancient Egypt, people believe that magic was a gift from the gods and priests would use this magic for healing, protecting, and divining. Similar to the ancient Egyptians, ancient China believe in magic and would use it for healing, protecting, and divining. In ancient Greece, they use magic as a way to communicate with supernatural beings and seek their help or protection. Even ancient Rome believed in magic and actually band magical practices.
During the middle ages, people believed that magic was a threat to the established order of society. Churches would condem magic and associate it with witchcraft and heresy, so many of those who practiced magic would be persecuted and executed. Even though magic was persecuted during the middle ages, that still didn't stop people from practicing magic in secret. Infact during this time, the legend of King Arthur became popular and in those legends, the wizard Merlin was vital to his rise to power.
During the Renaissance, there was significatant changes in the culture of the European people. One of these changes what the prespective on magic. During the Renaissance people became more interest in magic and the ocult and believe that through magic they could learn the secrets of the universe. This is also where the idea that secience was a natural phenomenon and could be explained by secience became popular. This idea only became more popular during the age of enlightenment where more people started believing the magic was just a superstition and had no place in society.
During the 19th century, magic became less of a form of mystical powers and more as a form of entertainment like it is today. Stage magic became its own distict art form and stories like Harry Potter only cultivated the interest in magic. During the 20th century magic only contuined to evolve and soon turned into what it is today.
